Renegades, Outlaws and Characters

Woodlake has had its share of interesting historic characters. Renegades, outlaws, and just plain characters gravitated to its early unrestricted and friendly lifestyle. Most interesting among these may have been a man by the name of Ben Harris. A revolving resident of Dry Creek, Lemon Cove, Woodlake, Visalia, and Mineral King, Ben left a heritage of more tall tales than any other man of the area. Louise Jackson will introduce some of those characters and a couple of Ben’s wild tales.

Book signing at Three Rivers First Saturday Celebration

Louise Jackson will be available from 3:00pm to 6:00pm to sign copies of each of her books, including her latest, A Man for his Times, a story of one family’s Tulare County lumbering and mining history. Jana Botkin will be available to sign her latest book, Cabins of Wilsonia, a coffee table gem of art and life in the mountain community.

When the Visalia Electric came to town


On August 1, 1905, locals celebrated the inauguration of passenger service on the Visalia Electric Railroad. For almost ninety years, it supported the area's agricultural communities. Its story reflects that of a rural culture, perhaps more intent on relationships and experience than on keeping schedules. Today, historian Louise Jackson relates the story of how the train would stop at a small lake so the engineer could go fishing.
